There are many ways to enjoy the outdoors in Vail, Colorado – even if you don’t want to ski. Most people think of hitting the slopes in mountain towns to enjoy the snow, but there are other ways to get outside and breath the fresh air and see the beautiful Colorado mountains. Here are a few of our favorite outdoor activities in Vail to enjoy that don’t involve ski lifts, skis, or snowboards.
Free Snowshoe Tours
If you want to explore Vail Mountain without flying down the slopes, snowshoeing is a great option. The Nature Discovery Center offers free snowshoes that are available every day of the week! Take an educational walk through the forests on the mountain. You’ll learn about animals and winter ecology, and enjoy the views of the mountains.
Plan Your Trip: Sign up for the free tour (which includes snowshoes!) at the Nature Discovery Center. Tours are offered daily from 2-3pm, and evening tours are available Thursday-Saturday from 5:30-6:30pm. All you need is warm clothing, and a valid ski pass or scenic gondola ticket.
Ice Skating in Vail
Ice skating is one of the best ways to enjoy the chill of winter. Nothing beats skimming across the ice, knowing a cup of hot cocoa is awaiting you at the end of your adventure. There are two options for ice skating in Vail:
Plan Your Trip: The Lionshead Village ice rink is much smaller than Dobson Ice Arena: Each one offers a different experience that is fun for skating abilities at all levels, and for every age.
Go On a Sleigh Ride
If you’ve never been on a winter sleigh ride, you’re missing out. Sitting in a sleigh pulled by strong horses through the wintry beauty around Vail is one of the best ways to enjoy the season. This options is great for travelers of all ages – young and old alike.
Plan Your Trip: Bearcat Stables is the place to go for your horse drawn sleigh experience. You sit in their cozy sleigh, and sip a hot drink, as you tour through some of the most beautiful scenery in the state. You can opt to have dinner (which is highly recommended!), or just take a sleigh ride.
