Betty Ford was well-loved in the Vail and Beaver Creek communities.
Having vacationed here for years (they owned a condo in the Lodge at Vail when their kids were young), the Fords built a home in Beaver Creek when that resort first launched. The Fords attended many of our events as “regular people”… from Christmas tree lightings to concerts and dance festivals at the Ford Amphitheater to benefits at the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens. I’ll never forget seeing/hearing Mrs. Ford lead the crowd in singing “God Bless America” at a July 4th concert a number of years ago.
The Betty Ford Alpine Gardens is a wonderful, permanent tribute to Mrs. Ford. The gardens demonstrate her love of flowers, personal grace and commitment to community. This week, I think I’ll make a point of spending contemplative time in the Gardens in honor of Mrs. Ford. It’s a beautiful place to pause and reflect.
The Fords truly loved the Vail/Beaver Creek area, and developed and maintained many meaningful friendships with locals here. If you have any thoughts you’d like to share about Mrs. Ford and her long and heartfelt relationship with our community, we invite you to share them on Vail.net’s Facebook page.
Rest in peace, Mrs. Ford!
