Vail Rec District Hosts Kids Activities: Olympic Sports Spectacular!
Is your family in search of healthy activities for kids in Vail? Starting on February 27th, Vail Recreation District will be hosting the Olympic Sports Spectacular on Thursday afternoons. The Sports Spectacular gives children from first through third grade the opportunity to experience a unique assortment of sports that are featured in both the winter and summer Olympic Games. The activities include Nordic skiing, ice-skating, gymnastics, wrestling, basketball, and tennis.
Steve Croucher, Vail Recreation District’s Sports Coordinator, believes that kids in Vail Valley have a wider option of sports available to them than ever before. The Spectacular presents the opportunity for children to explore these possibilities. “The Spectacular is a great way to introduce kids to a variety of Olympic sports without being tied to an activity for six weeks,” said Croucher.
The activities include both team-oriented sports as well as events that are focused more on individual performance. But no matter what the activity, the Spectacular aims to be inclusive and supportive of all participants by prioritizing fun as opposed to the competitive aspects of the Olympic Games.
“Parents don’t always know what sports their children are going to gravitate towards,” said Beth Pappas of Vail Rec, “so this an opportunity for kids to try a number of sports without commitment, and really find out what appeals to them.”
The cost for the six-week program is only sixty dollars per child, and includes equipment. Of course, participants are encouraged to bring equipment of their own or use whatever they are most comfortable with. A responsible adult will moderate participants at all times, and safety precautions are in place to ensure that the sports are fun and safe. The schedule for the games is as follows:
4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27: Wrestling, Homestake Peak School
